Born in 1952 in Moscow, he received his BFA in Foreign Languages from Moscow Institute in 1972. Working as an assistant at the renowned Moscow Film Studio, Makarov began exhibiting his work together with Moscow underground artistic elite. After relocating to East Germany in 1975, Makarov continued his artistic training at Berlin Academy of the Arts, simultaneously studying history at the celebrated Humbolt University. Significant fraction of his practical training comes from his tutor Werner Klemke, a well-known magazine and book illustrator. Makarov received interim schooling at Vienna Academy of the Arts and in the studio of the famous surrealist painter Rudolf Hausner. Nikolai Makarov’s works are included in the permanent collection of the Arnot Art Museum, Elmira, New York, Busch-Reisinger, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig, Germany, Collection of Copper Plates and Drawings, Berlin, Museum of Modern Art, Berlin. In March 2009, Nikolai Makarov’s solo exhibition took place at The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. The artist works and lives in Berlin, Germany.
